How do I photograph my art?

This is a common problem for traditional artists. You’d think with modern digital cameras and “point and shoot” technology that photographing paintings done in oils, watercolors, acrylics and the like would be simple; but any artist, amateur photographer or professional photographer who’s tried will tell you that it’s one of the more difficult things to do.

We’re going to run a two-part series this week that discusses how to photograph your art and also how to manipulate the image to adjust colors and clarity so that the image is accurately portrayed. We’ll also discuss things like dpi, ppi, resolution, pixels and how all this relates to file size and submitting your image.

We’ll keep it simple, basic and try to avoid all the hi-tech camera talk that the photographers and printers throw around so easily.

So stay tuned over the next few days and hopefully we’ll provide some information that will help you with, not only this contest, but future situations that require  high quality photographs of your art.

The Arts For The Parks 2007 Competition is an international competition open to all traditional, digital and photographic artists who desire to portray their appreciation of America’s National, State and Local parks through the beauty of their own art. Artists may portray any National, State or Local Park, regardless of where they actually live and may submit multiple entries. All entries are free.

Submitted artworks are categorized by District, based upon the particular park depicted in the artwork, not the residence of the Artist. We wholeheartedly encourage artists to portray State and Local Parks as well as National Parks. They benefit from this competition, too. There are nine Districts contained within three Regions (view the map by clicking on the link in the sidebar). The Top 100 artworks are selected from the total pool of District entries.

From the Top 100, three artworks are selected (one from each Region) as Regional Award Winners and a fourth artwork is selected as the Grand Prize Winner.

In addition, there are special categories for the top digital, photographic and plein air works as well as special Judges Awards and specific Sponsor Awards.

All Award Winners will have their art portrayed and promoted in special limited edition prints, calendars, notebooks and other event memorabilia. All Top 100 contestants are awarded certificates. In addition, artworks receiving Judges and Sponsor recognition will receive Bronze Medallion Awards. Regional Winners will receive Silver Medallion Awards and the Grand Prize Winner will receive the Gold Medal. There are also cash awards available in many categories. We will update our awards list from time to time as additional sponsors are added.

Our Beneficiaries are the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) and the particular park depicted in the Grand Prize Winner’s artwork. Seventy-five percent of surplus funds will be donated to the NPCA and the balance will be donated to the organization representing the park depicted in the Grand Prize Winner’s artwork. In this way, State and Local parks can benefit from this competition.

All entrants will have their name and a thumbnail image of their art submitted to Congress in support of NPCA’s efforts to promote the upcoming Centennial Anniversary of the National Park System and to provide more funding for the National Parks in general.

Enter your art. Support a park. Again, all entries are free. More information is contained in the Prospectus (click on it in the sidebar on the right-hand side of this page). Please enter. Our parks need the special kind of support only artists can give.

The deadline for entries is November 30, 2007.
